Natural stones have fascinated people for thousands of years. Long before they were used in modern jewelry, cultures around the world gave them names, stories and meanings. In this article we look at four stones we love working with in our Amsterdam studio: turquoise, red agate, black onyx and red jasper. We focus on their look, their history and the symbolism traditionally linked to them.
A note before we begin: the meanings below are cultural and symbolic associations. They are not medical or scientific claims, and natural stones are not a substitute for any kind of treatment. We simply think the stories add something special to a piece you wear every day.
Turquoise: the colour of open skies
Turquoise is one of the oldest stones used in jewelry. Its colour ranges from bright sky blue to green-blue, often with fine darker veins called matrix, so every stone looks different. Turquoise has been treasured in many cultures, from ancient Persia and Egypt to Native American traditions.
Traditional associations: protection, calm and open horizons. Turquoise is often seen as a stone of travellers and a symbol of friendship, which makes it a popular gift.
How to wear it: turquoise works beautifully with silver and with warm reds such as coral. Browse our turquoise jewelry, from the Turquoise Tale Earrings to the versatile Convertible Turquoise Necklace. Because turquoise is relatively soft, treat it gently; see our care guide.
Red agate: warmth and balance
Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony, formed in layers over long periods of time. Red agate shows rich, warm tones and, when held against the light, a subtle translucency. Agate has been carved into seals, beads and amulets since antiquity.
Traditional associations: vitality, courage and emotional balance. Red agate is often described as a grounding, steadying stone.
How to wear it: a necklace of round red agate beads, like our Red Agate Necklace with a 925 sterling silver clasp, adds warmth to neutral autumn and winter outfits: think camel, cream, grey or black.
Black onyx: timeless and grounding
Onyx is also a form of chalcedony, known for its deep, even black colour when polished. It has been used in cameos, rings and beads since Roman times and remains a classic in minimalist jewelry.
Traditional associations: strength, protection, focus and self-confidence. Onyx is often seen as a stone that helps you feel steady and centred.
How to wear it: black onyx is the most versatile stone of the four. Our Black Onyx Necklace works on its own with a white shirt, or layered with silver chains and pearls for contrast.
Red jasper: earthy and strong

Jasper is an opaque stone with natural patterns that can look like landscapes or brushstrokes. Red jasper gets its warm, brick-red colour from iron. It has been used for beads, tools and amulets across many ancient cultures.
Traditional associations: strength, stamina and a grounding, earthy energy. It is often linked to stability and confidence.
How to wear it: red jasper's earthy tones suit autumn colours and natural fabrics like linen and wool. See our Red Jasper Necklace, made from 10 mm beads with 925 sterling silver details.

Why no two stones are the same
All four stones are natural materials. That means colour, pattern and translucency vary from bead to bead and from piece to piece. When we design a necklace, we arrange the stones by hand, so the finished piece is truly one of a kind. Small variations are not flaws; they are proof that the stone is natural.
How to choose your stone
- By colour: choose the colour you already love wearing. Blue and green tones (turquoise) feel fresh; red tones (agate, jasper) feel warm; black (onyx) is timeless.
- By meaning: if you are giving a gift, the symbolism can add a personal touch to your card: turquoise for friendship and travel, onyx for strength, red agate for courage.
- By style: minimalist wardrobes suit onyx; bohemian and summer styles suit turquoise and coral; earthy, natural styles suit jasper and agate.
Caring for natural stones
Natural stones need very little: keep them dry, away from perfume and lotions, and store them separately so they do not scratch. Our full jewelry care guide explains everything step by step.
